That’s right… Scramble Network is moving off to its own domain, with loads of new features on the way. Really, this wordpress site was sort of a soft beta to work on my blogging skills, and it ended up doing better than I ever dreamed.
The feeds have already been adjusted, and I won’t be taking this site down for a while. So please enjoy the much better-looking and considerably more functional new Scramble Network!
The Annual Licensing show out on the West Coast always brings word of interesting tie-ins, some of which are pretty unexpected. This years No-way-in-hell-did-I-see-that-coming award goes to Mumbo Jumbo’s THE OFFICE VIDEOGAME.
No, seriously.
Do work, play pranks, and more as an employee of Dunder Mifflin Scranton.
The irony of people in cubicles playing a video game about people in cublicles should not be lost here.
The game will be developed for the DS and PSP, as well for PC and online play. Its a bit low-tech to aim for the next-gen consoles.
And while we’re on the subject, in case you missed it, here’s that OTHER great last minute of a season finale that took us by surprise.
Sometimes you see a headline that just puts a smile on your face, and you know that sometimes, yes, Hollywood gets it right, and truly great films get made.
Frank Miller will adapt and direct the classic Raymond Chandler novella, TROUBLE IS MY BUSINESS, with Clive Owen set to star as Phillip Marlowe… I’m hard pressed to think of any team better suited to tackle this material. Miller eats, sleeps, and breathes noir, and Owen proved he can deliver an old school monologue better than anyone with his role in Sin City. Even more exciting, this could be the beginning of a franchise, with more Chandler adaptations on the way!
This actually something Owen has been fighting for, he convinced Universal to get the rights to these books, and word is he had a big hand in getting Miller in the Director’s Chair. I’ll go on record as saying I think this is the part Clive Owen was born for.
For those who haven’t read Chandler, Marlowe is the James Bond of private eyes… he’s the protype for most of the great heroes in noir fiction. As Bond is to Secret Agents, or Indiana Jones is to adventurers, that’s Marlowe for detectives. Every one of those “beautiful, dangerous woman walks into a Detective’s office” scenes you’ve ever watched… yeah, that’s Marlowe.
Phillip Marlowe’s got a brilliant and storied history on the screen… the most notable potrayal being Humphrey Bogart’s classic turn in one of the greatest films ever made, THE BIG SLEEP… here’s that trailer:
A litte more, huh? Watch Bogie sweet talk the ladies, including the stunning and brilliant Martha Vickers…
The next person to take on Marlowe was Phillip Montgomery in LADY IN THE LAKE… the gimmick: this film was shot entirely from Marlowe’s perspective; we see what he sees. It gets a bit tiring after a while, but I hope Miller gives a nod to it at some point:
Twenty years later, James Garner breathed fresh life into the role with MARLOWE… I love this film, Garner does a great job… and it has BRUCE LEE… as a villain! Here’s a couple scenes:
A true classic here: the greatest director of all time, ROBERT ALTMAN, with ELLIOT GOULD playing a very different Marlowe. The result was unconventional, controversial, and a complete masterwork… enjoy one of the finest trailers ever made, for THE LONG GOODBYE–
There have been plenty of other takes on Marlowe, but those are your highlights. Revisiting this character is long overdue… Owen has a big task in front of him, but with Miller’s help, I think he’ll do an exceptional job. This could be the beginning of something great.
Loads of new official casting announcements for fans of NBC’s HEROES! Here’s the rundown:
DAVID ANDERS– so he IS joining the cast! The former Alias star will play… get this… TAKEZO KENSEI!!! That’s right, of the much sought-after Kensei Sword! Like you, I figured Kensei was… ummm… Japanese! This one looks to be VERY interesting, can’t wait to see how it plays out.
ERIKO TAMURA– Pictured above (whoa), will play Hiro’s new love interest, Princess Keriyama!
BARRY SHABAKA HENLEY– plays Detective Fuller, an NYPD cop.
HOLT MCALLANY– will play Ricky, an Irish thug.
LYNDSY FONSECA and DIANNA AGRON– will play cheerleaders in the town Claire moves to. You might remember Agron as Jenny Budosh on Season 3 of Veronica Mars!
So it looks like the cast is set… Can’t wait for the new season to start!
So, there’s a new KING OF KONG trailer up today. AICN is going so far as to call this movie the next ROCKY. I will say it does look like a great story… and exactly what the documentary form was made for. And the “It’s sort of like the abortion issue” line is classic.
But you know, I still prefer the previous trailer, if only for great use of THE WHO… goosebumps! It really makes these guys sound like the gladiators of their time that they were:
Yes, that Marc Forster: Stranger than Fiction, Finding Neverland, Monster’s Ball, etc.
People are gonna jump all over this and say it’s a terrible hire. But keep in mind, most of those complaining are the same ones who said Daniel Craig could never pull off Bond.
Forster’s a talented guy. I say he’ll do a great job.
I’m excited to hear more about this one: Bryan Singer’s new film VALKYRIE, telling the true-life tales of Nazi generals who plotted to assassinate Hitler. Tom Cruise will star, and today, we found out who else is on board: Carice Van Houten, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, and Eddie Izzard.
I loved Singer’s last look at Nazis, APT PUPIL, and I’m dying to see this one. It also reteams him with USUAL SUSPECTS scribe Chris McQuarrie, giving us even more reason to hope for a masterpiece.
The After Hours skit is a tough one to top, but here’s the latest Mac parody for your enjoyment– this time the villains get some love… same results, though:
I work at DC Comics, and you’ve got some big love here. There’s a bunch of us who take your word for gospel, and though it’s already sorta out there, we just wanted to send some info your way on the Veronica Mars comic books. They’ll be published by our Wildstorm imprint, which is based in San Diego, and R.T. is looking to be firmly on board. We’re even hoping for a late fall release of the first issue. Hopefully, more to come…Keep up the good work!
This is about what I expected, but coming a bit sooner than I had hoped! The book will be in good hands over at Wildstorm– they handle most of DC’s licensed properties, and have done a fine job with SUPERNATURAL. Sounds like they will in fact be written (or at least plotted) by Rob Thomas, so expect some high quality work!
Wizard has a MUST-READ interview with Zack Snyder on making WATCHMEN. Its got loads of great information and insight, especially this bit on what should be in the trailer:
“Dr. Manhattan walking through Vietnam 200 feet tall, the Comedian riding with the 50-caliber rifle and shooting at the Viet Cong and burning out the village…Those images are going to be like, ‘What the f—?’ Or you have Rorschach being taken down by the SWAT cops—that’s a cool sequence. There are a hundred of those types of things, but…not only are they superhero images, but they’re also images that challenge you in the same way the movie will.”
Anybody interested in this pic really needs to check the whole interview out!
Sci-Fi Wire has a couple of quotes from Tyrese Gibson, talking LUKE CAGE:
“They’re doing rewrites on it now, and we actually have a meeting coming up on it soon, from what I hear, just to see where we are with the whole thing,” Gibson said in an interview while promoting Transformers. “Right now they’re in the process of getting the rewrites done, and then they’ll, I guess, do kind of a formal presentation to see if it’s going to be a go.”
Asked what interests Gibson most about the super-strong and hard-to-hurt Cage character, he replied: “I just love his presence, and I love the fact that he’s one of the first black comic-book characters. I’d like to make the comic-book world proud with what I’m looking to do with Luke Cage. So hopefully the opportunity all pans itself out. Me and Singleton are both looking to be a part of it, if the screenplay turns out right. I met with [producer] Avi Arad, and he’s very excited about the possibility. But you can’t do a great movie without a great script, and the ducks have got to line up.”
I really believe John Singleton has a kick ass Power Man movie in him, and I think Gibson’s the guy to make it happen on-screen. This flick NEEDS to happen.
With Halo 3 on its way to us, the licensed products are being rolled out at a furious pace. The one that’s got us most excited? Check it out:
Damn.
McFarlane Toys are producing a line of brilliantly detailed Halo 3 action figures- expect to see Master Chief, Brute Chieftan, Jackal Sniper, Cortana, and a Grunt two-pack. They won’t hit til Spring 2008, but they look to be more than worth the wait.
Check out these beautiful, just-released stills from the highly anticipated SUPERMAN: DOOMSDAY direct-to-DVD animated feature! Finally, we get a preview of what this baby is gonna look like!
Wow… those look great to my eyes! I was surprised they stuck so close to the style of the WB animated series, but hey, if it ain’t broke, right? The DVD hits in September, the official site is here, and the big premiere is at Comic-Con next month– can’t wait for that!
And if that’s not enough Superman: Doomsday goodness for you, check out Voices from Krypton interview series with Producer Bruce Timm: Part 1, part 2, and Part 3 are streaming now!
