Box Office: Silver Surf’s Up

June 18, 2007

Turns out they didn’t need Galactus after all.

Defying critics and comic book purists, FANTASTIC FOUR 2: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER scored a strong $57 million at the box office this weekend, just barely surpassing the first film’s opening take.

The big question is how this will do in its second week– will it see the same dramatic dropoff many of the big blockbusters have suffered from? And will international receipts make up the difference?

In what had to be the worst positioning ever, NANCY DREW tanked, earning just $7 million. Why they positioned it up against such a family-friendly mega-movie is beyond my understanding.

The success story of the summer is obviously KNOCKED UP, which sits at a strong #3, with its total earning closing in on $100 million. Hey Hollywood– apparently, people like this kind of film, MAKE MORE OF THEM. Considering it had a budget of less than $30 mil, someone’s making some serious money there.

Also, OCEAN’S THIRTEEN dropped off less than 50 percent, showing it may have some legs.

Thursday Evening Round-Up: The Veronica Takes Precedence Edition

June 8, 2007

Yeah, yeah, I know… there are a big number of readers here who have probably never even seen an episode of VERONICA MARS, and you’re all wondering when the regular blog posts start back up. I mean, wasn’t there some 80’s toy line that got optioned into a script today?

Seriously though, here’s all the news you probably already got somewhere else by now:

Oh, the new TRANSFORMERS theme song is sweet.

Sean Connery will NOT be appearing in Indy 4. Bummer.

The Speed Racer site is up and running!

Judd Apatow is being sued by someone who claims he stole the story for KNOCKED UP. We ain’t buying it. For a second.

CBR continues their weekly coverage of the big X-events.

Neil Gaiman is giving us a bit more DEATH confirmation. Puts a smile on the face.

AND… Chud’s got some interview snippets with Mr. Gaiman on the subject.

Enjoy 5 beautiful pages (plus cover) from Alan Burnett’s debut on SUPERMAN/BATMAN.

Continuing with all things Gaiman, three STARDUST TV spots are up over at the movie site. Click ‘Video’.

Shadowpact artist Tom Derenick is now DC exclusive.

Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are re-teaming on IMPERIAL LIFE IN THE EMERALD CITY. Sounds interesting.

The Broken Lizard team (SUPER TROOPERS, BEERFEST) have a new pic in production: TAILDRAGGERS.

MySpace Comic Books has an exclusive first look at Devil’s Due’s DRAFTED.

This one will get people talking: WB is adpating Orson Scott Card’s EMPIRE.

Newsarama’s got some clips with FF2 writer Don Payne.

Assassin’s Creed, for PS3, XBox 360, and PC, hits this November. Looks very, very good.

Is my favorite comic book company from when I was a kid, coming back? Valiant apparently returns, but sans MAGNUS, TUROK, and SOLAR. Not sure how to feel.

Whew… I think I’m caught up now. Maybe.

Knocked Up wins big… get ready for YEAR ONE and more!

June 4, 2007

Success!! Knocked Up had a GREAT weekend at the box office. The studio tried to keep expectation in the high-teens… most of the experts had it in the low-t0-mid twenties… so to come within a hair of $30 million, and to beat Pirates per screen– well, that’s just HUGE!!! For the full box office analysis, go here.

This means we can expect to see much more of our beloved FREAKS AND GEEKS/UNDECLARED alumni all over the place! That’s pretty sweet vindication for a gang of folks who were looking for jobs not so long ago. This just goes to show that sometimes perseverence IS rewarded, and these good things couldn’t have happened to a funnier, more talented group.

Maybe this will even cause some people at NBC or FOX to rethink things the next time they rush to cancel an unconventional show with a die-hard fan base… after all, these box office numbers definitely show there’s a market for this kind of comedy, which Judd used to bring to TV EVERY WEEK.

Seeing Seth, Jay, and Jason up there on the big screen was a real treat. And with SUPERBAD, FANBOYS, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS coming out this year, we’re definitely going to see plenty more of them. But what about 2008, you ask? Well, here’s a rundown on all the exciting project Apatow and Co. are working on…

  • YEAR ONE: Just announced, really can’t believe news this great! Apatow will produce… the movie is written and directed by none other than thelegendary HAROLD RAMIS!! And it stars JACK BLACK and our boy MICHAEL CERA!!! No word on the story yet, but c’mon– APATOW, RAMIS, BLACK, and CERA– how can that go wrong?
  • WALK HARD: Apatow produces, Jake Kasdan (the man behind the amazing ORANGE COUNTY and the underrated ZERO EFFECT) directs… John C. Reilly, Jenna Fischer, and Ed Helms star in this comedy about a down on his luck Johhny Cash-like musician.
  • YOU DON’T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN: Former roomies Apatow and Adam Sandler reunite in a story about a Mossad agent who becomes a hair stylist. Seriously!
  • FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL: Now this is one we can’t wait for… the scene-stealer himself, Jason Segel, playing opposite Kristen Bell! Segel (who also wrote it) plays a guy who takes a vacation to Hawaii after breaking up with his tv star girlfriend (Bell), only to have her show up with a new guy at the same resort.
  • DRILLBIT TAYLOR: Apatow produces this one, John Hughes did the story… two kids hire a bodyguard to protect them from a bully.
  • TROPIC THUNDER: Jay Baruchel stars with Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. (Tom Cruise is rumored to have a cameo, too) in this comedy about actors in a military movie who are forced to become the soldiers they potray.

This is by no means a complete list, but you get the idea, right? After years of waiting, these guys are becoming the stars they’ve always deserved to be, and we’re gonna get some great movies out of it.

This Weekend: Go see KNOCKED UP

June 1, 2007

Its REVENGE OF THE UNDECLARED FREAKS AND GEEKS, with Judd Apatow bringing us KNOCKED UP starring SETH ROGEN, JAY BARUCHEL, and JASON SEGAL, among others. The flick is getting RAVE reviews, scoring a 92 on Rotten Tomatoes and an 85 on Metacritic— those are HUGE numbers for a comedy like this.

It’ll be nothing short of a tragedy if this film tanks. This needs to be 2007’s Wedding Crashers or 40 Year Old Virgin– it deserves to be. Don’t wait for the DVD or cable–carve out some time this weekend to see KNOCKED UP, help make sure these kinds of movies KEEP getting made.

Raise your Energy

May 29, 2007

We are counting the days til Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen’s KNOCKED UP comes out. With FREAKS AND GEEKS being our favorite TV show of all time, and UNDECLARED falling somewhere in the Top 10, this return of Apatow-flavored slice of life comedy is loooooong overdue…

But as great as all this is going to be, would KNOCKED UP be even better if it starred his SUPERBAD leading man Michael Cera of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT and CLARK AND MICHAEL fame? See for yourself…

Michael Cera gets fired from Knocked Up
